UTechnology > MPEG-4 AVC decoding and transcoding

As opposed to the numerous proprietary existing solutions, which often imply erratic evolutions, the MPEG-4 AVC Standard for the video, as well as its AAC counterpart for audio, are the only credible and long lasting alternatives that shall fulfil both the consumer and the Industry expectations. Moreover, thanks to better compression performances than Divx™ and MP3™ - while keeping the highest video quality output - MPEG-4 and AAC are de facto the genuine references for the next decade.

In line with the tremendous success that the MPEG-2 Standard has gained over the last ten years, the MPEG-4 AVC Standard is the latest output achieved by the two most important standardisation bodies in world, being the ISO/IEC (precisely the MPEG group), as well as the ITU along with its experts from the VCEG Group (Video Coding Expert Group)

A number of benchmarks using reference video sequences edited by the JVT experts (Joint Venture Team) have proven that MPEG-4 AVC supersedes today MPEG-2 with up to a factor of 3 in video compression performances. Moreover, various lab experimentations carried up by encoders manufacturers are even demonstrating that the average bandwidth for a broadcast television channel shall decrease beyond the megabit per second while maintaining DVD quality

  .: The NEOTION approach

NEOTION’s approach is once again rather pragmatic. Leveraging on break-through patented ways of implementing the MPEG-4-AVC codec, NEOTION shall soon release new products that will enable end-users to upgrade their existing receivers, whom applicable ones have been already deployed in tens of millions.

NEOTION shall also boost the entire Industry by associating, right from the release of the new chipsets, TV operators who have already expressed their decision to broadcast their channels in MPEG-4-AVC onto our systems. Those Editors, who usually offer subscription based access, shall also leverage from the rather performing and secured conditional access systems that NEOTION has developed and already implemented for 2 operators, soon 3 more.

  .: NEOTION Processor 4 - NP4

Last but not least - and this really a key advantage of the NEOTION development strategy that shall enable the company to meet instant demand for its MPEG-4-AVC powered products - we go straight to a silicon optimized design. This ASIC, which is indeed rather complex, shall integrate a patented architecture. As of today, alternative solutions are usually based on software running on fairly large DSP, which, despite the fact that they are indeed far more simple to develop than pure hardware implementations, are indeed incredibly expensive when compared to an ASIC, and therefore not tailored for massive consumer deployments.

The NEOTION silicon shall also, as it takes into account that MPEG-2 broadcasting will last for many years, benefit from its break-through and patented concepts to ideally tackle rather large booming Markets such as PVR (Personal Video Recorders), up to the wireless distribution of contents within the domestic household’s configurations.

  .: NEOTION and XEOLE

By taking-over 100% of the XEOLE company shares, NEOTION acquires a unique and advanced ASIC design center, as well as key patents that are instrumental for the massive adoption in the consumer space of the MPEG-4 AVC Standard, also known as H.264.

Anticipating a tremendous Market representing tens of millions units, NEOTION and XEOLE teams had been already working together for many months to develop extremely competitive solutions, especially through the design of very complex and optimised silicon computing hardware based AVC H.264 compression and decompression.

More information about the MEPG-4-AVC products can be disclosed under NDA.

.: MPEG-4 AVC H264 codec has been already elected by:

  • DVB: broadcast
  • 3GPP: mobile
  • HD-DVD: storage
  • BDA (Blu-ray): storage
  • ISMA: streaming
  • ITU-T (H.32x): videoconference
